This is Phil!

This is Carson!

Welcome
to the Monster Coast!

(And Coconaut and Sword Beast)

We are the Creators of Here Be Monsters

We made this game out of love. We grew up in the era of trading card games like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh and of course Magic: The Gathering. We made up our own games on index cards back in elementary school (even drawing on tin foil to make the cards "holographic"). We loved that assembling a deck meant putting your own personality into the game - in choosing your strategy or even just your favorite characters. We loved that the rules were so simple, but each new card broke the rules in fun and exciting ways.

And yet we struggled to get into the community.

Games isolated themselves into meta-specific decks and if you weren't playing those it was hopeless to keep up. Tournaments were all about competition instead of a love of the game. And new cards were coming out every three months, often requiring shelling out a hundred dollars to buy a booster box to stay competitive.

So on a whim, during the height of the Pandemic, Phil and Carson decided to try making their own game, with a structure that made sense for them. It was just a fun hobby at first, with neither thinking the game would make it past a few weeks before they gave up on it. But week after week they continued to playtest and refine the game.

Four years later and Here Be Monsters has 180+ pieces of art (created by Carson), has been rigorously playtested by dozens of players and has expanded far beyond what either Phil or Carson ever thought possible.

We love this game. We love pirates. We can't wait to share it with you.
